IC Information:
Name: Asura, often referred to by the title Kishin Asura. Kishin means 'fierce god' but is also translated as 'demon god.'
Canon: Soul Eater (manga version primarily, happy to play anime version)
Age: Over eight hundred years (with specifics undetermined).
Note: Anything in italics is headcanon.
Appearance: Unusually pretty except when he isn't.
He is quite tall and seems to get taller or shorter depending on his mood, ranging from six and a bit to well over seven-foot, but he tends to stoop a little. In the past, he compulsively wore heavy layers, wearing six or seven lay shirts of various styles under a red pinstripe blazer. He keeps the same pattern in the modern day on some kind of sweatshirt. He wears extremely baggy trousers that pool around his feet to conceal them. He always wears several white scarves, which are literally part of his body and cannot be removed. He often wraps them firmly around his face. His figure also changes based on his mood- sometimes, he is distinctly twig-like, and sometimes he bulges with muscles that strain his clothes. Usually, he is a svelte but muscular build, like a gymnast or danseur. His eye symbols are repeated on the back of his hands and a little ring of 'X's go around his middle fingers.
Inside of his eyes, he has a second set of eyes, and he has eye symbols in his hair. Occasionally he sprouts extra eyes on other body parts. He has no eyebrows, but his lashes are very thick, and he naturally looks like he's wearing a lot of eyeliner. Similarly, his fingernails are naturally black.
He is, to some degree, a shapeshifter able to alter his appearance and physical makeup, but how much and how easily is not clear. Most of what we see of it is done by manipulating himself with his hands, like moulding clay.
History:
SPOILER WARNING; The majority of information regarding Asura is a spoiler for the series.
Asura is a fragment of the God of Death, Death. Death, the world's only god, yearned to be a being of pure order, and so separated from himself all of his fears; these fears took the form of Asura. It has been hinted he was probably created 'mature'; in other words, he had no childhood and was immediately an adult with a great deal of power.
The exact details of this period are mostly unclear, but at the time, Death was waging war against Witches, a species of magic users who were naturally destructive. Asura was made a member of Death's Eight Powerful Warriors, a group of his strongest underlings. During this period, Asura personally killed all the Witches in Asia before assistance could arrive and was generally not a good team player, to the point the others found him very off-putting. He was partnered with someone named Vajra, who was capable of turning into a weapon called a vajra (real creative).
Due to the considerable unease Asura felt from his nature as an embodiment of fear, and fearful of the extreme justice his father practiced he was consumed by madness and eventually ceased to be a shinigami like his father and instead became a Kishin, a demonic god. Eating his partner, two other of the Eight Warriors and countless human souls, Asura betrayed his companions and the world. Raining madness that caused lifeforms, objects and finally the laws of physics to become chaotic upon the Earth, Death was the only one who could stop him. He managed to defeat Asura with the help of another living weapon, tearing off his skin and forming a bag to seal his soul. Death was forced to root his own soul to one spot (Death Valley, Nevada) to keep Asura sealed away. This happened on April 1st, and was also the day Shibusen, Death's combat school, was founded. Death began to use his title/species, Shinigami, as his name soon after this.
Asura spent eight hundred years underneath Shibusen as a loose soul sealed in a bag. On the eight-hundredth anniversary, the snake witch Medusa enacted a plan to resurrect him that was ultimately successful. Using Black Blood, a mysterious substance she had developed, Asura awoke, and after swatting away the main cast, he flew out to face Shinigami. Without a Weapon, Shinigami could not restrict Asura again, and the Kishin escaped.
Taking refuge on the moon, Asura spent around a year there, recovering his strength. Throughout his time there, he continued to spread madness whilst in a resting state that reduced its effectiveness. Nevertheless, it brought about great damage and civil unrest, especially in the already unstable. All of the major villains of the series considered acquiring Asura's power as their goal. Along the way, a Shibusen elite named Justin Law was infected with madness and converted to Asura's cause. He found Asura, but it is unknown whether Asura ever woke up and interacted with him or if Justin acted as he saw fit in Asura's best interests.
Shibusen deduced his location in time and sent their elite to the moon. There they battled Asura's army of created life forms, the Clowns. Asura was actively involved only once the battle was over, when he encountered a scouting force searching for him in the depths of the moon. When he woke up, his madness increased and threatened to destroy all the Shibusen forces practically instantaneously and eventually the world. Before that could occur, he was dissolved and absorbed by the child of Medusa, Crona. Crona's entire life had been formulated for this purpose, as was the awakening of Asura using the Black Blood. Crona planned to use Asura's power for his own ends, but when they faltered emotionally, Asura decided Crona was not fit for his role as the world's embodiment of fear and took back his body. Now facing the main characters Maka Albarn & Soul Evans, BlackāStar & Tsubaki and his younger brother, Death the Kid & Liz and Patty Thompson in battle, Asura proved to be vastly stronger than them all even after Kid became a full Shinigami.
However, he still lost when Maka and Soul used their own Black Blood to enter him and found Crona. Using a powerful item with the power to combine lifeforms BREW, Crona's mastery of Black Blood and Soul linking together all the souls on Earth, Crona used the Black Blood to seal Asura again, this time in the moon. Claiming that the emotional bonds of friendship that gave them the power to seal him would one day break, Asura promised to patiently wait until it was time for him to return again.
Personality:
Born from fear and made entirely of it, every single action and thought of Asura's is motivated by terror. His only joys come from destroying what he fears. His only comfort comes from avoiding fear. His sole partnerships are to assist in defying fear. He is utterly selfish in this regard. Whilst his goals do include erasing the 'order' from the world to plunge it into madness, he is not doing so to make mankind free but because he would feel more at ease in such a world, where he needn't fear orderly ideas like justice or morality. When confronted in his hiding spot, he considers destroying the world just so people won't find him again. So consumed is he by his fear that he will, on occasion, start screaming mid-sentence.
A key personality trait of Asura is his paranoia. He has never been able to put his faith in any person or concept. This lack of faith led to his all-consuming fear, and in turn, to walking the path of the Kishin. He is so lacking in faith that he fears caring for others because it creates a weakness. He is constantly plagued by thoughts about how, in the future, he could be betrayed or how things could go wrong. But being as unstable as he is, he is not afraid of the actual events while they are occurring. For example, he dramatically fears the possibility of a confrontation with Shinigami, but when face to face with the god, he, in fact, laughs and doesn't hesitate to enter direct combat. Basically, Asura is terrified of uncertainty. The idea that someone somewhere might stab him in the back is far scarier than the certainty of an enemy right in front of him. This means that whilst he can like people and even in his limited way form partnerships, he cannot ever trust someone because there is the chance, even if it is one in a million, that they will betray him. It is possible to get close to him, but a lasting relationship is near impossible for him to maintain. He will either snap in his fear of the other party's betrayal or in finding himself actually connecting to a person, snap in his fear of that being used against him.
Other than that, Asura is a highly unstable fellow, as you would expect from the living embodiment of madness. Generally, he has three 'moods' which he swings between at the slightest stimulus.
There is his calm and collected side, which seems almost lazy in its confidence. When he is in this mood, he speaks quietly, in a controlled manner. He usually talks philosophically, yet with a laid-back attitude, he looks comfortable, perhaps even lethargic. Strangely, this mood often comes to the front when he is fighting, or performing other such important business. The sort of thing he feels comfortable doing, where he thinks the outcome is inevitable. Generally, he comes across as quite cold, but sometimes he seems smug.
There is also his manic mood, where he screams, cackles and flails around. He swings wildly between all the emotions a human can feel like this, although usually, this mood crops up when he is either very angry or terrified. Sometimes, however, he will slip into this mood when he finds something funny.
Finally, there is a quirky mood. He tends to be very informal in this mood and can have quite pleasant chats with people though he can be quite childish. He tends to place great importance on unimportant things, such as people's clothes, how nice it is to have muscles, or the taste of the souls he is eating.
To top it all off, from his perspective as a god, he considers humans to be scum that are so far below him he doesn't even need to attempt to understand them- he does not, however, hate them or wish for their extinction. He is merely so indifferent to the entire species that he has no concern for humanity unless they personally become involved in his affairs. To the point he doesn't care if they all die due to his actions. He believes it is at his discretion to decide who lives or dies. Even as a god of terror, he does not wish to understand human fear. He is instead focused upon his own. Asura is opposed to the concept of order, from complex society to the laws of physics. He finds madness to be much more comfortable on a personal level and, as a selfish god, sees no problem with eliminating order for his own purposes. He places no value on anyone but himself and gives his followers the freedom to kill whomever they like.
Speaking of followers, Asura doesn't seem bothered about acquiring them, nor does he seem to reject them. It is implied that in the past, some races of creatures that did not fit into the orderly world imagined by Death chose to actively ally themselves with Asura and even eight hundred years on some remain loyal (a werewolf in the series once mentioned that they preferred the idea of a Kishin to a Shinigami). It seems the typical method to show admiration for Asura is to gather souls for him in tribute, and he apparently rewards people that please him. The central tenet of Kishin worship seems simply to be a devotion to extreme freedom, emphasising the idea that they are free to kill whoever they wish.
Post-canon Asura, as I play him, is significantly more relaxed and though he has not developed a favourable opinion of humanity, he has gained a curiosity about them. Having experienced the pure terror of losing to humans, he wishes to understand that fear and by extension, humans themselves.
Abilities:
The major capabilities of Asura come from his soul. He possesses a soul that produces an inexhaustible amount of energy in a range that can engulf the planet in the soul wavelength, which causes madness: In people, objects and even causes the laws of physics to be defied. This takes a great deal of time to go beyond encouraging unstable humans to become more drastically insane whilst he is in a resting state, but when he is awake, it is accelerated. The further the distance from Asura, the greater the length of time. In stable and ordinary people, even ones naturally not attuned to wavelengths or directly resistant, it can cause hallucinations. However, his madness can be purified and dispelled through the right methods. It is established that a body is just a container for a soul and if his soul is within another vessel, it becomes him. It allowed him to not care when he was eaten because he just took control of the body in turn. When used directly as an attack, the results are extremely dramatic, causing people to endure horrendously torturous hallucinations of their deaths or worse. In a seemingly unique ability, this can lead to targets self-harming/ending their own lives whilst their minds are tortured. what happen to us indeed By altering perceptions, he can effectively become invisible.
If enough of this madness accumulates in locations that are 'cradles of madness' (in other words, sinister places where bad things have gone down or anywhere that Asura is physically present), it will create a Clown, a being with its own soul that exists entirely to spread madness and follow Asura's orders. Each clown possesses its own abilities and appearance and is a unique individual. Their bodies can be recreated as many times as necessary so long as his wavelength can reach their soul, making them expendable. All clowns are capable of teleportation, passing through physical objects and spreading madness, as well as having unique abilities exclusive to themselves. They can also combine with other entities (or each other) in what is dubbed 'Madness Fusion', massively boosting their power in exchange for the host's sanity further deteriorating.
Due to his apparently unique ability to swallow a Weapon whole and have it become a part of his body, he has assimilated Vajra, who takes the weapon form of a vajra (Yes, confusing), a ritual object of Buddhism and Hinduism, although this particular one has an unusual spear-like tip. He can half-puke it up and use it as a spear or a focus for energy blasts. He seems to be able to do this with anything he has consumed- the odd internal world inside of him contains the dissolved souls of everyone he has ever eaten, and he can selectively eject or contain those people and objects inside of him. It is possible to forcibly enter him, but breaking out is extremely difficult unless he is wounded from the outside.
He can use his wavelength more directly as an offensive weapon or shield. This is significantly amplified when he resonates with Vajra. He uses this in the form of explosive shock waves, black flames, electricity, crushing force and beams of various forms. As an (ex-) Shinigami he has a powerful potential for magic spells and crafting magical tools, though we don't see much of what he's capable of. Common abilities shown by all known Shinigami include storing souls without consuming them, communicating long distances through mirrors or spells, creating shields of energy, storing items in an inner world in their bodies, special senses and putting souls to rest. They all also have the ability to create a method of transport (a flying skateboard and small rockets in others), but Asura can fly under his own power. I headcanon his created transport as a flying sports car named Moloch.
His body is extremely tough. He's easily one of the most powerful characters in the Soul Eater universe and can smack around people capable of army-destroying feats using just one hand. Indeed, he can fight two such opponents at once when his hallucinations and insanity inducement have been temporarily neutralised. More often than not, he simply takes attacks head-on instead of dodging or blocking, usually literally laughing them off. IAsura is impossible to kill as long as fear exists. However, it is implied that if he is successfully 'replaced', he can cease to exist. Since Asura is the one who decides if his successor is worthy, it seems unlikely it will happen. Like all Shinigami, his body rejects foreign forces, such as radiation and poisons, to the point he can't get a tan or dye his hair. His body is malleable and stretchy, allowing him to create clothes out of his own skin when naked. He retains complete control over these extensions to his body and his signature skill is using the scarves he has created as additional arms. He also has some degree of control over his body's form, being able to open his mouth wider than his head or turn his tattoos into actual eyes, alter his height, sprout extra eyes whenever he wishes etc. He can regenerate from anything that actually does wound him, but he can be incapacitated indefinitely. This has happened twice so far. First by being skinned alive, having his soul torn out and sealed in the skin sack. It took pumping the bag with magic blood to awaken him. The second was using that very magic blood to seal him in the moon.
This is Black Blood, a substance injected into him to revive him, as he had no blood at the time. Black Blood is a metal substance that grants power in exchange for robbing a user of their sanity and in particular, increases the user's durability and healing. It can also be used offensively to create weapons and dissolve people, leaving their soul as an insanity-inducing sphere. Asura's inner world contains an enormous ocean of Black Blood that can be used to engulf the entire moon (which is admittedly smaller than the real-world moon, being about the size of a large city).
He possesses the ability of Soul Perception, which, as the name suggests, is the ability to perceive souls. This allows the user to understand those they are looking at and operates as an effective sixth sense. His is especially sensitive, able to track people exceptionally accurately.
He's an agile and fast flyer.
His least elaborated power is his Wall of Suspicion, an ability that can apparently disrupt bonds between souls, and renders him immune to attacks generated from unbreakable bonds (such as those between parent and child). It can only be overcome by powers that rely on bonds that overcome great differences (e.g. age, ethnicity, gender). I don't really get it either.
After absorbing Crona, Asura's body contains both the Book of Eibon and BREW, extremely powerful magical items. Asura showed himself capable of selectively ejecting items from within the Book of Eibon through his mouth, but neither of the items is assimilated- if someone enters Asura's body and retains their form, they can be found and used.
Despite having extreme skill and tactical application of his powers, Asura fights like a nincompoop from a strategic viewpoint. He constantly wastes time and never shuts up to just get things done. Half the time, he stands in place and lets his opponents mess around however they like. When he does do something, it's usually needlessly sadistic. However when he actually decides to end things he does so exceptionally efficiently, discerning and exploiting weaknesses.
